Handwriting

At St Peter’s, we teach handwriting through the Kinetic Letters programme, a highly structured and research‑informed approach that helps every child develop fluent, legible and confident handwriting. The programme is built around four key strands — Making Bodies Strong, Holding the Pencil, Learning the Letters, and Flow and Fluency — ensuring that children develop the physical strength, fine‑motor control and letter‑formation habits they need to write with ease.

Kinetic Letters is taught systematically from Early Years onwards, with children learning letter formation through clear, memorable stories and consistent routines. Daily practice helps pupils build muscle memory, develop stamina and write with increasing automaticity. This reduces cognitive load, allowing children to focus on the content of their writing rather than the mechanics.

Our approach aligns closely with the Department for Education’s handwriting guidance, which emphasises:

  • Accurate letter formation taught from the earliest stages

  • Consistent, modelled practice to secure fluency

  • Strong foundations in posture, pencil grip and motor control

  • High expectations for legibility and presentation across the curriculum

By combining the DfE’s expectations with the structure and clarity of Kinetic Letters, we ensure that handwriting is not an isolated skill but an integral part of children’s communication and learning. Our aim is simple: for every child to develop a handwriting style that is legible, fluent and comfortable, enabling them to express their ideas confidently and with pride.
