St Peter's CofE Primary School
"Every Child a Success"
At St Peter’s, children do not begin using Accelerated Reader until they have completed the Read Write Inc. phonics programme. This is because we believe that secure phonics knowledge is the essential foundation for learning to read.
Once children have finished Read Write Inc. and can read with increasing confidence and accuracy, they begin their Accelerated Reader journey.
Accelerated Reader at St Peter’s
At St Peter’s, we use Accelerated Reader to inspire, motivate and support our pupils on their reading journey.
What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader is an online tool that helps children choose books that are matched to their reading level and interests.
How does it work?
After completing an initial reading assessment, each child receives a ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development)—a personalised reading range that helps them choose books matched to their reading level. This ensures that every pupil selects texts that are appropriately challenging while still enjoyable and accessible. Children's understanding of what they read is assessed every half-term using the online STAR reading assessment.
Children read their chosen books at school and at home, then complete a short online quiz to check their understanding. These quizzes celebrate success, build confidence and help teachers monitor progress so that support can be tailored where needed.
