Mix It Up and Further Reading

Session based on whole class reading book

(16 copies of book for children)

At St Peter's we have carefully considered our choice of whole class books to include a wide range of literature spanning across:

1)Big ideas at the heart (friendship, ability to corrupt)

2) Diverse range of voices and back grounds of children at school/society

3) Rich lyrical language

4) Potential to develop children’s wider knowledge

5) Deliberately widening horizons with culturally rich content

6) Offer opportunity to encounters different genres/format

When choosing we also refered to Doug Lemov’s ‘Five Plagues of Reading’ to choose books which reflect

1) Archaic language 2) Non-linear time sequences 3) Narratively complex 4) Complexity of stories  5) Resistant stories

VIPERS

During sessions, children are taught the skills of comprehension through the use of VIPERS. The children will focus on specific reading skills throughout the week.
